Our original plan when we started building the trailer over a year ago was that we would drive it up to Alaska in August, where I would work a locums job near Anchorage for about 3 months. Well, if you've been reading this blog, you know we're way past plan B at this point. However, with a stroke of irony, I did end up getting a locums job in Alaska- for a week in December in Homer. Not exactly how I'd pictured it, but I am so glad it has worked out.
I got a call from a locums agency back in August saying while they did not have anything for me sooner, there was an opening at Southern Peninsula Hospital in Homer in mid December, to cover the ER and clinic for a week. That gave me enough time to get my state license and credentialing, and I said yes. Fast forward through the (seemingly) endless paperwork, and I got my Alaska state license, DEA, and hospital privileges. William and I flew from Phoenix to Anchorage on 12/16, then down from Anchorage to Homer the next day, and I had orientation and started my 4 days of 24 hour call on 12/18. Apart from a few phone calls and clinic on Wednesday, it's been pretty quiet, which has left William and I time to explore Homer. We came here on our big trip in August, and we loved the little town, so we were excited to come back. It's definitely quieter in the winter, but it is still beautiful. Because it's on the ocean, it doesn't get quite as cold as other places in Alaska. It's usually been in the teens at night and in the 20's during the day. We've gotten a bit of snow, but nothing too crazy. We've enjoyed wandering down to the harbor and looking at all the fishing boats. Some of the boats from the show 'Deadliest Catch' are based in Homer, and since crab fishing isn't open right now, they are in port (I think that is the right terminology?)
We also saw some wildlife.
The sun rises at 10am and sets at 4pm, so we have little time to enjoy the day, but the views are incredible.
And so are the sunsets!
Today, we head back to Arizona to spend Christmas with my family, then we start our trip to Australia and New Zealand on 12/26!
